Savage Stevens (Chicopee Falls, MA) 30-D Slide-Action Shotgun. Stevens and Co. Underwent an expansion in 1880, and in 1886, the firm changed its name to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. When the company sold its interests to Lyman Gun Sight Company of Middlefield, Connecticut. It is an old hammerless J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Single barrel, break action 12 ga shotgun with a safety on the tang. The only number on the gun is ZE 708. Maybe this is the serial number.
Shawman, Stevens started out in 1864 as J. Stevens Arms Company. In 1886 the name was changed to J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co and remained under that name until 1916 when it changed to New England Westinghouse.
It was bought out by Savage in 1920. Stevens Arms Co' brand name was again used until after WWII, then just the name 'Stevens' was used up until 1990. Most likely, you have a pre-Model 94. Manufacturing started in 1894 but the model number was not used until 1939. This was the only break barrel single shot shotgun made by Stevens during this period. It would have to be made no earlier than 1894 and no later than 1916 when the company name changed. Stevens made almost a million of these basic shotguns in 12, 16, 20, 28 gauge and.410 bore in barrel lengths from 26 to 36 inches.
410s all had a full choke. Not real valuable but in a 410. Probably worth about $100200, depending on condition.
